MOUNT LONGONOT

Mount Longonot National Park offers one of Kenya's most thrilling and rewarding hiking experiences. Located about 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, the park is famous for its dormant volcanic crater and scenic landscapes. The hike to the summit provides spectacular panoramic views of the Great Rift Valley and the surrounding landscapes, making it a must-do for adventure seekers and nature lovers.

The volcano, which erupted about 3 million years ago, has left behind incredible geological features, including the crater, lava flows, and distinct rock formations. The hike offers a rare chance to explore one of East Africa's most iconic volcanic landscapes.

The hike takes you from the bottom of the park where you meet your local guide who knows the terrain and will share interesting information about the park's history, geology, and wildlife. The hike to the crater rim, which is about 2,776 meters (9,100 feet) above sea level, starts with a first steep hike 3 km, 300m elevation).

Once on the rim of the crater, you can venture into the crater itself (possibility to make camping). Depending on your energy level, you can also walk along the edge of the crater (total of 13 km, 700m elevation). The trail on the rim offers fantastic views in every direction and is a major highlight for hikers. You'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, with expansive landscapes, deep valleys, and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

The park is home to a variety of plant and animal species. As you hike, you'll encounter savannah grasslands, forest patches, and acacia trees. It is also home to wildlife such as buffaloes, zebras, gazelles, and monkeys, so keep your eyes peeled for sightings along the trail. Birdwatching enthusiasts will enjoy the chance to spot various species of birds, including eagles, vultures, and hornbills.

Hike duration: The hike to the summit and back typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours (6 km, 300m elevation), depending on your pace and how long you spend at the top enjoying the views. The trail around the crater rim takes an additional 2 to 3 hours if you choose to explore further.

Difficulty: The hike is moderate to challenging, with steep sections and some rocky terrain. It requires a good level of fitness, but it's accessible to most people who are in reasonable physical condition.
